I kind of went out on a limb here with this keyboard. I’m a fan of numeric keypads for number entry and I didn’t know if I could live without those faithful 10-keys over to the right. The problem was I’m growing frustrated with the cable clutter that has made moving my computer around a pain in the rear.
I decided I’d try to get a wireless keyboard. My first search was to look at Logitech and even Microsoft for options but neither had a keyboard that was in the price range that I wanted and had the size that I wanted (small). I decided to shell out of the Apple BT keyboard after buying my girlfriend the USB version with the numpad.
The “chiclet” keyboard takes only a short time to get used to and once you have it down it’s not a problem at all. Those of you with a recent Macbook already know what the keys feel like. Here’s the bonus I never saw coming. This keyboard is so much quieter to type on than any keyboard I’ve owned prior. As I type this the sound coming from the keyboard is muted and not obnoxious. My gf is so happy that I’ve replaced the noisier white USB Apple KB of a few year ago.
Battery life is good. The BT keyboard goes to sleep when not in use to conserve battery power. The keyboard is small but not so small that average hands will feel too cramped. This isn’t a Netbook keyboard folks.
I’m learning to live without the numpad but frankly getting desktop space back and quiet has made this purchase something that I should have done a while ago. Next up will be replacing my Logitech mouse with a Magic Mouse + 3rd party software to add more gestures. That’s two USB ports freed up and no longer the need to keep the Logitech cradle in my surge protector.
The Apple BT keyboard may not be for everyone but if you’re borderline and a fence sitter try it out in a store and see what you think. You too may want to cut the chord sooner rather than later.
